SIRIA Y LIBIA SE MANTIENEN ¿HASTA CUÁNDO?

MIDDLE EAST: Syrian Forces Attack Eastern City

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's military forces launched an attack (NYT) on the eastern city of Deir al-Zour, killing dozens and forcing thousands to flee. In a stern public statement, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia criticized the Syrian government for the ongoing violence against anti-government protesters, and recalled the Saudi ambassador from Damascus.

The United States and some international partners are pressuring Damascus through the UN and other channels as Assad's crackdown on protesters intensifies. Expert opinion remains mixed on whether the Syrian government can be weakened, says this CFR Analysis Brief.

Libya: Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi's government troops fought rebel forces (al-Jazeera) for control of the northern town of Zlitan, as other government forces tried to retake the western town of Bir al-Ghanam, near Tripoli.
