6. Ukrainian Ex-P.M. Found Guilty

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was found guilty of exceeding her powers and sentenced to seven years in prison on Tuesday. The charges stemmed from a gas deal she signed with Russia when in power in 2009. The United States and the European Union have condemned the charges against Tymoshenko as politically motivated, and while the judge read out her sentence she spoke over him, vowing to “fight to defend my honest name.” She was a leader of the country’s 2004 Orange Revolution but fell out of power in 2010. The court also ordered her to pay back the $186 million the state gas company lost on the deal.
